Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition Hosts Ninth Annual Summit on Homelessness and Housing - October 9th and 10th
Emporia, KS - October 17, 2008 - (RealEstateRama) — The Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition (KSHC) will host the Ninth Annual Summit on Homelessness and Housing next week in Emporia. The FREE, two-day event runs Thursday, October 9th thru Friday, October 10th, at Emporia State University Memorial Union located at 1200 Commercial Street. Sponsored by Kansas Housing Resources Corporation and the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, the conference will offer 20 presentations on topics aimed at breaking the cycle of homelessness, such as healthcare reform, advocacy, coalition building, rural homelessness and permanent supportive housing services.
“The challenge may seem insurmountable, but it is possible to end homelessness in Kansas,” said Randy Crandall, KSHC Chair. “By strengthening our existing partnerships and creating new, broader coalitions, advocates, service providers, business leaders and elected officials can build a caring community across the state that simply no longer accepts homelessness.”
The theme of this year’s conference is “Ready for Change.” Keynote presentations will include:
• Steve Berg of the National Alliance to End Homelessness:
Berg specializes in employment, economic development and human services, and the crossover between those issues and housing.
• Mark Johnston from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:
As Deputy Assistant for Special Needs at HUD’s Office of Community Planning and Development, Johnston is responsible for administering the department’s $1.7 billion in assistance for persons who are homeless and low-income persons with HIV/AIDS.
There is no cost to attend the summit; however, the Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition asks for a $20 donation. Online registration ends this Friday, October 3rd, 2008, but you may register onsite the day of the summit.
