New Housing in McPherson Benefits People with Disabilities
–Genesis Homes to Offer 16 Units of Accessible, Attractive and Affordable Housing–
McPherson, KS – September 23, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Officials from Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC), the State of Kansas, City of McPherson, McPherson Chamber of Commerce and Multi-Community Diversified Services (MCDS) celebrated the grand opening of 16 permanent, supportive housing units for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. The newly-constructed Genesis Homes is located in the 900 block of Clubhouse Drive in McPherson.
Colin McKenney, MCDS President and CEO, said “we are so pleased to expand housing options in McPherson for people who need accessibility at an affordable price. The idea of offering this type of spacious and attractive housing has long been a goal for MCDS, and we hope that Genesis is just the first step in that regard.”
Kansas State Representative Don Schroeder, District 74, also attended the grand opening and said the completion of Genesis Homes is a great addition to the community. “This is a beautiful facility, one which will attract new residents to McPherson. I know it will be very well used,” said Schroeder.
Funding sources included Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and HOME funds awarded by KHRC, as well as private donations from MCDS. Midwest Housing Equity Group served as the tax credit syndicator. Additional partners included Vintage Construction and Krehbiel Architecture.
Fred Bentley, KHRC’s Rental Housing Director, said the corporation is honored to have played a part in making Genesis Homes a reality. “Housing developments like these are a great addition to the neighborhood and create high-quality, affordable housing for Kansas families that need it,” said Bentley.
Features include energy efficient heating systems and appliances, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, grab-bars and hand-rails, lowered or modified kitchen cabinets and equipment, handicapped parking, an in-house tornado shelter and safe room, and a security system with on-site video and audio monitoring. Rents for the efficiency units average about $345 a month.
