This year’s activity-packed event features 28 breakout sessions, four keynote presentations, two networking receptions, daily prize giveaways, a trade show and a tour of innovative affordable housing developments in Topeka.
In addition to keynote presentations led by Thomas Hoenig, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Eco-Journalist Simran Sethi and Architectural Historian Christy Davis, the conference offers the following:
The Center for Leadership Innovation (TCLI) – Welcome Plenary & Field Exercise
Jeff Nugent, President of The Center for Leadership Innovation, will discuss the transformation of community-based development. Jeff will cover emerging strategies to achieve meaningful social change and how to articulate funding approaches in line with these new assumptions. Joe McNeely, Development Training Institute Founder, will conduct TCLI’s interactive field exercise involving the Topeka Rescue Mission and the Topeka Housing Authority. This is NOT a tour! Participants will help craft high-impact strategies to address affordable housing challenges facing the city’s homeless population and underserved, blighted neighborhoods.
Training to Enhance Organizational Capacity
To help community development organizations improve performance, the Kansas Housing Conference will offer a full-day, pre-conference training on capacity building. Presented by NeighborWorks® America, the training takes place Tuesday, September 7th. Seating is limited! Click here for more info.
State Housing Policy Plenary – This timely discussion focuses on affordable housing issues and their impact on Kansas. National and regional experts will address federal and state housing policies, showcase housing initiatives gaining momentum across the country, and offer updates on rural rental housing and preservation. The session includes a dynamic conversation with state and local officials on the need to develop a comprehensive affordable housing plan for the State of Kansas, and a presentation on how local and state governments in the region are promoting sustainability by adopting green building codes.
Empress Hotel Feature Presentation – This moving documentary by Academy Award-Winning Filmmakers Irving Saraf and Allie Light chronicles the homeless tale of ten San Francisco residents from diverse backgrounds who face the challenges of having a mental illness or addiction.
