Moran Introduces Legislation to Improve Disabled Veterans’ Housing
Bill Would Allow More Wounded Warriors to Achieve Independent Living
WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 17, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Jerry Moran introduced legislation this week to help more disabled veterans modify their homes to achieve independent living following injuries sustained during military service. The Specially Adapted Housing Assistance Enhancement Act would improve an important Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) grant program that assists veterans with disabilities construct or modify homes to meet their mobility needs.
“We have an obligation to care for those wounded in service to our country,” Moran said. “My bill will assist more disabled veterans adapt their homes to their disabilities. This legislation will help severely injured service members and veterans who face great challenges to live easier, more independent lives in the comfort of their homes.”
Moran’s legislation, H.R. 4319, would expand eligibility for adapted housing grants to veterans who have lost a limb and are further impeded from independent living by the limited use of a remaining arm or leg. Additionally, the bill creates a pilot program to encourage the use of adapted housing grants for disabled service members residing temporarily in housing owned by a family member.
